First Days in Amsterdam

I'm starting to get my bearings in this new city and I bought a bike today, which will help a great deal. I've discovered a big and beautiful park, Vondelpark, which has hosted two consecutive mornings of knitting. I cast on for another Daybreak yesterday morning and today I'm halfway through the stripes.

I chose The Sanguine Gryphon Bugga! as it's one of my new favorite yarns. This Daybreak (my 8th I think?) is a gift for someone, but it has me thinking about another version for myself. I have sweaters on the mind though so I'll try to whip up a couple sweater patterns for this Fall and Winter. We'll see how I persevere with those larger design projects. There will plenty of new and exciting accessories in the mean time.

I've been taking advantage of the much appreciated chilly weather! I was surprised by the gray morning clouds, coming from the sweltering midwest heat, but it's been perfect for breaking out the handknits!

I even had to retreat indoors from knitting outside this morning because my hands got too cold!

Today, I had a couple little photo shoots. You'll see the results for a new pattern called Clockwork next month, but I snapped some touristy photos I can show you of another version of the Boneyard Shawl.

I wear bandanas a lot during the summer, so this wool Boneyard bandit made with Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light will be a great little transitional piece into the cooler months ahead.

The flat I'm staying at for the moment has a cat, which I found sniffing at my suitcase full of knits and yarn, so I'm keeping my eye on him.

I'm not used to having pets around, but I plan not to underestimate Figaro the Cat.

There are also many dogs in my new knitting park, but the one that caught my eye was a puppy in a shop window. I wish he was for sale.

I still have some settling in to do, but Amsterdam is great so far!

Wow, it sounds like you've already made yourself at home. That's great! The dog in the window really is adorable.

Your current Daybreak looks surprisingly almost exactly like the one I am so so so close to finishing! Greys and orangey reds, BMFA...mmm. Good luck on your new adventure!

I'm envious! I went to the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Den Haag) once a year for two weeks for business over the last 15 years, and I miss it! My Dutch DNA really fit there. It's a great place to sit & knit isn't it? I hope you enjoy exploring your new home, and I will look forward to your wonderful designs to come..

that is the cutest puppy! my cat doesn't attack fiber, just my dad's feathers. I wouldn't worry too much but do keep WIPS out of reach!

Welcome to Amsterdam! We're excited to have you here. Don't forget to drop by SnB on Monday. It's at the library, not De Jaren, this week. (Sort of controversial, but we're trying it out). Hope to see you soon.

Hello - I'm also a knitter from Amsterdam :) I run a knitting group at ABC Treehouse, just of Het Spui in the centre. We have a FB page "Crafty Me" and you can also find me on there (Nat).

We're on holiday at the moment but we're starting our meets again September 14th, Tuesday. It's a free night, just bring a snack and have a chat with some other locals in a relaxed atmosphere.

Nat :)

How exciting (and brave!) of you to move to another country, and Amsterdam is such a lovely city - my now husband proposed to me there 15 years or so ago - so it's quite a special place for me.

I knit a Herbivore a while back, and completely love it. Recently my friend Margarita made an AMAZING and HUGE daybreak using my own handdyed yars as a stripe with black as a base and a few chartruese stripes in the border.

I was so taken with it I started one too - with some of the recent Sundara Napa Valley Club yarn colours. I think this pattern really suits rich moody colours because it's such a sophisticated piece when made oversize ..

I really love your designs, thanks for them ....

I wouldnt worry too much about the cat: cats are hugely attracted to the smell of wool, especially if it s the smelly kind with the grease still in it, and also, your wool will be smelling of your old home ie new and interesting to Figaro.
You do need to find out if kitty is a yarn shredder though, I've had cats all my life without a single problem until the Kitten of the Apocalypse came along and now all yarns have to be kept out of paws reach!
Cats are great knitting companions though :)

I was just in Amsterdam for a day at the end of August. It was the first time I'd ever been there and really enjoyed it. I brought along a hand-made shawl to give to a my friend who lives there. We've been pen pals for about 10 years and this was our first face to face meeting. I hope you love Amsterdam. By the way, we went to a lovely little cafe called VOC near the train station - its an old corner building in front of one of the canals - give it a try if you can.

I love the Vondelpark! Let me know when I can come visit you, okay? I'll bring a spare suitcase full of Bugga.
